Despite this, all other players in the session will retain any experience and gear they earned while in the gameplay session. Additionally, story progression is only saved for the host leader. Enemy difficulty and the chances to encounter tougher enemies increases based on the number of players in a party. Missions and enemies are scaled to the level of the session host, regardless of the levels of other players. While player tethering is not unlimited, it is generally relaxed with a limit of several hundred meters. Each player in a session can play as different characters or the same character if they choose. Cooperative play can be done with up to three other players. Once selected, players are locked to a character for the duration of their save file. Players can customize the appearance of their character through unlockable skins. Each character has their own unique abilities and skills which can be upgraded by leveling up and spending skill points. The game lets players choose between four different survivors with two other characters set to be added post-launch. Aside from the main story, side missions are also available to players like procedurally generated Vampire Nests. Once they are defeated, they will drop skulls which act as keys for players to battle the Vampire Gods who serve as final bosses for each chapter. After enough territory has be reclaimed, players will be allowed to face the leader of the neighborhood, the Vampire Underboss. Safehouses enable players to replenish supplies, interact with other survivors, and undertake unique missions. Players take back territory within each neighborhood by capturing Safehouses. Players undertake a variety of missions in areas known as Neighborhoods. Redfall is divided into two areas, District 1 on the east side of the island and District 2 on the west side. Trapped inside Redfall, it is up to four suvivors to end the threat for good - cryptozoologist and inventor Devinder Crousley, telekinetic college student Layla Ellison, combat engineer Remi De La Rosa, and supernatural ex-military sniper Jacob Boyer. To isolate themselves from the outside world and prevent anyone from escaping, the Vampire Gods blocked out the sun and pushed the water back from the island. After a "failed" scientific experiment by the bio-company Aevum Laboratories, they transformed themselves into vampires and subsequently took over the town. The game is set in the quaint island town of Redfall, Massachusetts.
